The Arab Friend

Year: 1990

Organization: Carmine Fornari

Production: Casanova Multimedia, Aleph Film

An Italian works for two years in Tunisia surveying ancient engravings. He finds that he has to deal with cultural differences just as he is about to return to Italy for his mother’s funeral. The fact that he is in Tunisia only temporarily; the fact that he is alone, without an Arab friend or lover, calls for an incredible turn of fate and causes a dramatic incident. Brigands on horseback attack him during a trip he undertakes by coach, he is seriously wounded and his eyes are affected. His temporary blindness seems to give him new insights: before dying, an Arab friend tells him the story of his life and as he narrates the fantastic tale, rich in mystery, symbolism and sorcery, the Italian acknowledges the fact that he cannot leave Africa.
